New York Trip, Day 1, Friday [27 May 2006|01:17pm]
I'll try and flesh these out a bit more as I go along but no promises. For now you'll have to deal with just the quick and the dirty.

Our train was supposed to leave at 5:40am but didn't. More like 7am. Then 7:30am. All aboard, Amtrak. B and I headed for our private room (a dinette which is the smaller of the two available private rooms) and hunkered down for the trip. Comfortable reclining chairs gave way to two bunk beds, one high, one low. I took the high road and passed out for a bit after breakfast until I was woken by the snore machine below me. Also, very hot trannies. No, really.

Got to NY like 3 hours late. Took the cab to Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Very much enjoyed the vengeful defensive driving that our driver employed on the way there. (More here later re: Brooklyn, the apartment, etc.)

Went out to eat after quick showers to a Thai restaurant called SEA. I'll resort to the City Search description here:

"Walk into a crowded world of disco balls, trance music, mod chairs and even a swing or two. Then, discover a sea of tranquility: a pool surrounded by greenery, watched over by a golden Buddha. Downtown club meets Buddhist shrine in this large, airy space. However, the slow and sometimes rude service is more clubby than Zen."

Yup, that about sums it up. About the water pool? You can sit beside it at tables for two and eat. Good food (I had dumplings (that weren't bad but played second fiddle to the sauce they came with) and a red curry with chicken (that was actually spicy when it was described as spicy - what a concept!) but way way too loud to have conversation. Also, eye candy galore and interesting bathrooms (cylinders with three urinals and an LCD display over each urinal showing views of the restaurant).

(More here later re: whatever)

MC Frontalot in Chapel Hill was, in a word, awesome. Front and his crew sounded great live, were all over the stage and generally gave a fantastic accounting of themselves. The only downside? Not nearly as many people there to see him as there should have been.

I'm somewhere between terrified and petrified of dancing in public. No bullshit. I'm thinking I want to take some lessons. Any suggestions on where to go? Anyone?

Under the knife. Again. [28 Mar 2006|03:41pm]
Just back from the podatrists office where I had a wart cut out of my foot. Woo-hoo. He used something akin to an apple-corer to cut around it and then plucked it out. Bled like hell. Still bleeding like hell. Let the healing begin!

I hate being sick. I hate the downtime. I hate not being able to taste food. I hate not being able to keep food down. I hate everything associated with (not) sleeping.

C'mon Tamiflu, do your magic.

It's becoming a tradition. Right around the time of Chris' birthday party, I wound my foot. This time? Another nail partially cut out. Thuis time by an actual podiatrist and not the butchers at the ER.

So home, foot elevated, resting, etc. You all know the drill by now.

(Also, yet again, not enough numbing stuff. Numb for eight hours my ass - it started hurting before I made it to the parking lot.)

More Ikea but not quite done - I found more stuff I wanted that wouldn't fit. Three's the charm, I think.

[ mood | apathetic ]

Things I need to do this year, the sooner the better:

1. Find a new job.

I was informed the Monday before Christmas that GSK would be laying me off early this year. At the time the severance information, specific dates, etc. was not available but that should be remedied in the next week or two.

2. Sell my house.

I have no legitimate need for a house the size of the one I currently own and with an impending change in job status my desire to sell is even more pronounced. It's ~1900 total square feet (~1625 of which is heated) sitting on 0.24 acres of land near Leesville and 540. It has 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, vaulted ceilings in every room, a back deck and a bonus room above the garage that is unfinished.

3. Find a new place to live.

While I still havn't decided where I want to move I'm exploring all options - renting space in someone's house, buying another (smaller) house/townhome, etc. The economics of a roommate are highly appealing but the freedom of living alone may eclipse that if I have a choice. I'm just not sure right now.

4. Find a new home for my cat.

I accidentally became the owner of a neurotic domestic short hair tabby back in '97 and I've been off and on trying to find a new home for him for years now. I won't lie - he's got some issues but he's a nice cat who just needs more loving and attention than I can give him.

Son of a bitch. [28 Dec 2005|12:42pm]
Long term readers of this journal have come to realize that I wound my feet at least twice a year on average. Horrifically stubbed toes. Broken pinky toes. Ingrown toenails torn out by uncaring ER docs. The usual.

So for those readers it should come as no surprise that I just tore the tip of my small toe off on my left foot. Yes, tore off. (Just the tip, don't panic.) And I didn't even notice it for roughly 10 minutes until I realized my left foot was sticking slightly to the carpet when I went to move it. Apparently drying blood will do that.

(I caught it on the edge of a bookcase shelf I had sitting to the side as I assembled new furniture. I looked down, wiggled it and thought all was well and moved on. I didn't notice the bleeding until I'd been sitting for a few minutes checking mail during a break.)

All the blood is cleaned up, the toe is bandaged and I'm back at the furniture assembly as soon as I finish this entry. Good times. Good times.

Interview in 3 minutes. Already thrown up once. This isn't going quite as well as I'd hoped and it hasn't even started...

Good times. Good times.

:)

Edit: Worst. interview. ever. People say things like that all the time but really, I mean it. How bad? I was so rattled I was flubbing the technical questions, the stuff I KNEW. I'm not sure anyone has ever said 'ummm' that many times in a 60 minute span.

Infomercial Confessional [18 Nov 2005|11:02am]
Confess - what infomerical/"as soon on tv!" product do you seekritly want to buy? (Or for the truly brave, which have you actually purchased?)

For me it's got to be the Ronco Showtime Rotisserie Oven. "Set it...and...forget it!" Or maybe one of the VacuSeal systems? You know, for zombie outbreak preparedness. Ahem.
